WHATS ALL THIS THEN?
it's all simple, really: small teams of heroes and villains compete in games to score points and complete objectives. Get the most points, win the season.
HOW DO THE POINTS WORK?
Points are awarded based on a combination of skill and style. SKILL is based on efficiency, effectiveness, and general performance. STYLE is based on visual interest, showmanship, and general awesomeness. Good strategy and clever counters might boost your skill, while flashy signature moves and good chemistry with other players might boost your style. Points are awarded as a combination of the two, so both are important consideration. In a tournament game, you might be able to win a fight in one move, but if it's not interesting to watch, the lack of style could tank your score despite high skill. All bark and no bite isn't good either; high style can't save you from consistently weak skills.
WHAT ARE THE GAMES LIKE?
The games are selected from a wide variety of event categories by league organizers and a unique combination is selected for every season, so there's no guarantee beforehand of what challenges players may face going into a season. One notable exception is the opening tournament, a classic bracket-style close combat tournament consisting of one-on-one matches. As the first event of the season, it gives the audience a taste of this seasons lineup.
other common game categories include BATTLE ROYALE, DUNGEON CRAWLER, INFILTRATION, HUNTER, and RIVAL. more about these under the GAMES tab (a/n: coming soon!)
One other major category of game is SPONTANEOUS events and BONUS points. Events may occur beyond official league-sanctioned games - Villain raising an evil horde of the dammed? Giant monster storming your city? Unstoppable freight train headed straight for an idyllic village? Threats like these can be combatted by players - if you're in costume, and it can be recorded by an Official PLHV Automatic Scoring Assistant [note to self - come up with a catchier name for these things], you can get points for it. BONUS points can also be awarded for general heroic or villanous activities, meeting the aforementioned requirements.
WHAT ARE HEROES AND VILLAINS?
exactly what they sound like! Heroic teams fight on the side of good, protecting the innocent and all of that good stuff. Bonus heroic points are often granted for things like intervening in petty crime, directing traffic, and assistance of the general public. Villainous teams aim to sow chaos, and are often granted bonus points for acts of destruction and general interference with the status quo. The teams are placed against one another and can gain advantages in games by foiling a rivals plans.
